1998 - Woodie Reflections
The route to Wavecrest takes you off Interstate 5, heading west
on Encinitas Blvd. The Santa Fe Railroad Bridge at Vulcan is
when you first glimpse the wave breaking at Moonlight Beach.
Once you've passed under the bridge, things change on Wavecrest
weekend. Time slows and maybe even returns to the post-war ear
a little. Everywhere you look, the woodies are parked or driving
by, looking like they did when new or hot-rodded like we remember
from the sixties. When the train rumbles over the bridge with
its whistle blowing, you almost expect to see one o the old steam
engines from the those by-gone eras. Observing
the poster you see a sunset reflecting off a 1941 Mercury Woodie.
Looking closely, the image of a steam engine is speeding from
the past into the future. this is a simpler time where trains
moved people and signals did not dictate how long you waited
before you were allowed to continue on your journey. You could
only reach people by letter or phones and then you had a partyline.
Summer seemed to last forever and you never had to lock you doors.
But wait...one a closer look, isn't that the moon reflecting
off a 1941 Ford? Isn't that the Coaster speeding overhead? Is
that a surfer with his board hanging out the back? Everyday at
work, everything he does is at top speed. His beeper goes off
constantly, his cell phone does not stop ringing, his boss is
on him to meet deadlines. But now he can grab his surfboard,
jump in his Woodie and head to a place where he can return to
a simpler time, with quiet rides on the first few waves of the
day.
Red is gray and yellow is white, now you decide which is right,
and which is an illusion...
