2000 - Looking Back at Velzy's
A surfer in the sixties could choose from a number of emerging manufacturers to make him a new custom surfboard. However, if he wanted to have one made by an experienced shaper who pioneered surfboard shaping his choice was limited. Dale Velzy headed the short list.
During the Fifties Dale influenced many of the best known shapers and surfers. During the short board revolution he continued to shape for other manufacturers.
When the longboards returned his label and innovative shapes once again led the way.
Our poster this year depicts Velzy's San Clemente shop as seen through the tailgate of a vintage Woodie. Dale opens the door on a '50 Plymouth and a '49 Chevrolet parks in front of his showroom.
A new "Velzy" sticks out of the tailgate along with a couple other boards as you drive away, headed perhaps to Swami's in Encinitas or Cotton's or the Trestle. Imagine you're in your woodie looking back at
Velzy's. |
