1999- Time and Again

Cardiff-by-the-Sea in the early sixties, not only boasted some of San Diego Counties best surf. But across the old Coast Highway situated by the beach, stood Don Hansen's Surfboard Shop. You could have a custom foam board built and then try it out within sight of the shop. Cardiff-by-the-Sea was one of the premier reef breaks in Southern California.

My older brother and I took many of our surfing trips to north counties great spots: Tamarak, Swami's and, Terra-Mar. His favorite was Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Whenever I surf or even drive by that site, I think of Rand. He was a big Woodie fan, owned the first one I ever rode in and taught me how to surf. (He so enthused me that when I was 13 I took his '53 Lincoln and his balsa board on a trip to Paddle Board Cove. That really ticked him off, but that's another story).

As a small tribute to Rand's passing you'll find a surfer in the clouds above the surf shop. Before he died, the Wavecrest Committee had already selected the Cardiff reef with one of the original shops making surfboards in the '60's Kind of cool to have this year's poster be his favorite spot. Good-bye big brother.





The 1999 poster, celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Wavecrest and is actually two posters in one. On one side you see yourself looking at one of the earlier surfboard shops with a couple of Woodies parked in front of it. When you turn the poster over you see the same cars, but you are now on the other side and looking towards the ocean with the surfboard shop at your back. All the lettering is reversed to give the viewer a even more dramatic effect of looking at the "back" of a poster.
