Surf Legends Posters        "While they Last"

2001 - Hobie's at Sunset

This is going to be a good summer....it is late May 1962. Doheny is a consistent 4' to 5'. Threstles and Swami's are 5' to 6' and the water temperature, as recorded at the San Clemente Pier is 67 degrees. 67 degrees!

This is really going to be a good summer... John Severson's movie, Going My Wave, is playing at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa and Dave Meyers and the Surf Tones are rocking out at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Newport Beach on Friday and Saturday nights.

This guy is going to have a great summer....he's taking delivery of a brand new Hobie Surfboard home from Hobie's shop in Dana Point. The summer stretches out before him with thoughts of surfing trips to Mexico with everyone chipping in for gas at 25 cents a gallon, meeting girls on the beach and eating 15 cent tacos at Taco Bell. The youngest president in history is in the White House and we claim him as our own. Viet Nam is some place few had even heard of and we are racing against Russia to put the first man on the moon.2001 Wavecrest Poster "Hobie's at Sunset" by David Doherty

You may not be able to go home again, but longboard and Woodie artist David Doherty has been able to pull a little bit of the '60's era into the future. This signed and numbered 22nd annual Wavecrest poster is the latest in The Legends of Surfing series that started with longboard shaper Don Hansen's shop in Encinitas (1999) and Dale Velzy's shop in San Clemente (2000) Moving northward we turn into Hobie Alter's 1962 shop at Dana Point. Hobie's at Sunset shows Hobie bringing out a newly purchased longboard to put on the rack of a 1951 Ford Woodie. To the left is a 1947 Oldsmobile who's owner just stopped by to check on the progress of his board. So close your eyes for a moment and you can almost hear KFWB's Emperor Hudson telling you to "Get off the freeways peasants, the Emperor's coming!" and smell Sea and Ski suntan lotion along the cries of the gulls and the salty, seaweed smell of the ocean.

This will be the greatest summer of all....
