Surf Legends Posters        "While they Last"

2003 - 24th Annual Wavecrest

During the 1950's Bing Copeland and Rick Stoner surfed the beaches of the south Bay area of Los Angeles County. They worked for Dale Velzy together and joined the Coast Guard at the same time. While traveling in the South Pacific they introduced modern surfboard shaping techniques to the surfers in New Zealand. Once home they opened a surfboard shop on the Strand in Hermosa Beach and sold surfboards by Bing and Rick.

By 1962 they had each independently opened shops on Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach about 1/2 mile apart and within a stone's throw of Hap Jacobs' shop on Pacific Coast Highway, Greg Noll's shop on PCH and Pier Avenue and Sunny Vardiman's shop on Ardmore. The surfing craze had begun in earnest.

Bing not only had his sales location, but he'd added a separate manufacturing facility near Jim Lymans in North Redondo Beach. Bing was one of the first to introduce signature models like the Dick Brewer Pipeline and the David Nuuhiwa Lightweight. Bing was also one of the major suppliers to the East Coast during the Sixties. To this day, if you have a Bing surfboard and can read the serial number Bing can check his records and tell you when it was made, who bought it and what it sold for.

Since the Longboards began to reappear, the most often top finishers in vintage contests have been a Bing surfboard. The 2003 Wavecrest poster depicts Bing in front of his 1820 Pacific Coast Highway shop loading a new Bing surfboard in a 1939 Pontiac Woodie. In the foreground a 1941 Ford sports period decals.
