1995 - Lost Ride
Just a few blocks south from where Sharyn got her ticket last year (1994
poster) and across the street from Swami's (1992 poster) is an old gas
station. Locals say it used to be a Mobil station. It is the Mobil station
that David O. Doherty has chosen for the scene of the 1995 Wavecrest Poster
artwork and this is the story.
Our story begins on Thursday, when George & Kathy Benson pack the "Merc"
with surf boards and left their home in Cambria on a journey southward that
would last 2 weeks and take them down into Baja. Every year they make this
trip, Kathy searches for sun and George, being a long time surfer, travels
the coast looking for those perfect surfing waves. But this year is
different because it will be the first your for the Woodie to make the trip.
Plans were to spend their first night in Ventura and Friday night would be
in Carlsbad, where they would spend a few days so George could surf the
local waters.
On Friday afternoon Bob Brelsford packed up his 1941 Chrysler and left the
heat of the desert for the more comfortable temperatures of Encinitas. Bob's
mission however was to chase a rumor. He was in search of an event called
"Wavecrest," a Woodie gathering. A friend told him it was the
"Woodstock for Woodies" and was to happen on Saturday at Moonlight
Beach. Bob would spend Friday night in Del Mar.
Early Saturday morning, the following circumstances brought everyone
together at that old Mobil station where a tall blonde surfer named Danny
works. You know Danny, don't you? He's the artist's son.
It's about 6 a.m., George & Kathy are traveling south on 101 so George
can catch a few early morning waves at Swami's. As they pass the Pannikin
(1993 Poster) an D.B. Hacker's, the old "Merc" begins to run a
little hot. Down past El Callejon, George's Cafe and the 101 Diner, things
really begin to heat up and by time they reach the Potato Shack and Hansen's
Surf Shop, the steam from the engine is making it difficult to navigate.
It's the Mobil station for them.
At about the same time, Bob is traveling north on 101 and not being familiar
with the area, he doesn't have clue where Moonlight Beach is...he's on a
lost ride. So, Bob stops at the Mobil station to read the map. George is no
help, he's on a surfing mission and knows nothing about a "Woodie
Convention" and besides, he lost his early morning rides at Swami's
because of a bad radiator hose. Now, do you remember Danny, the attendant at
the Mobil station? He saves the day. Danny directs Bob to Moonlight Beach
and help George by taking a radiator hose off his Dad's car, which is parked
in the back of the Mobil station. George & Kathy cancel their surfing
plans for the day and went to the Woodie Show called "Wavecrest."
So, where's the lost ride? Ask David, Danny's dad! He'll be at the
registration desk at Wavecrest. But be careful when you ask, he may not have
found a top radiator hose for his car...the Woodie parked in back of the
Mobil station.
