1997 - Dawn Patrol
During the early Sixties, you may have owned a Woodie....dented, no rear
seats, faded paint and peeling varnish, but a flathead that would run all
day and into the night of $3 worth of 25 cents a gallon gas. You also had
enough room for three or four friends and all your surfboards, mostly 10
footers. You awoke at 3 a.m. in L.A., Santa Monica or Redondo Beach, piled
everything into the Woodie and decided to head north or south on a weekend
surfing trip. If north, Rincon or Santa Cruz beckoned. If south, North San
Diego's Swami's, Cardiff by the Sea or Tamarack was your goal. Highway 101
took you past Huntington, Trestles, and Oceanside. Just as dawn was
breaking, you drove through the tall eucalyptus trees of Encinitas before
you passed Hansen's Surf Shop. There was a little breakfast cafe that was
open early, so you and all your buddies would pile out of the Woodie and
load up on pancakes before paddling out for the early morning "Dawn
Patrol" at Cardiff.
The 1997 Wavecrest Poster combines the old tradition of an early morning
surfing trip with the more recent tradition of the Wavecrest Breakfast Tour.
Though only in its fourth year, the tour has become a very popular,
well-attended part of our event. Both these traditions take place at a
restaurant on old 101 (First Street), once called Tyler's, the familiar
restaurant has been George's since 1983.
